[EzineArticles] A Smart Guide to Increasing Twitter Activity

A Smart Guide to Increasing
Twitter Activity
EzineArticles.com Logo

Did you know in 2013, Twitter had roughly 200 million active users who sent over 400 million tweets daily?

If you haven't been keeping up with Twitter, you may be losing an incredible opportunity to let your writing efforts take off. In this quick post, we're going to show you why Twitter should be a part of your efforts AND how you can avoid letting your Twitter account lie fallow.

Why You Should Be Active on Twitter

  • Improves your connection with readers and broadens your network.
  • Amplifies your brand exposure and boosts your social credibility.
  • Increases viral potential without needing a big marketing budget.
  • Helps you stay on top of news in your niche and current events.
  • Completes a social presence when used in conjunction with other social platform leaders.

Activate Your Twitter Presence

If your followers are hearing crickets, then you're not going to achieve the great benefits Twitter provides. You don't have to be on Twitter 24/7, but you do need to have an ongoing presence that isn't broken up by periods of radio silence.

Here are a few tried and true tweet types that you can share on Twitter in a jiffy:

  • Provide instructive and helpful tips that are relevant to your niche and resonate with readers.
  • Link to your original Vines, blog posts, articles, press releases, promotions, contests, and more.
  • Pose questions to all of your followers (even consider targeting a question to a specific follower).
  • Curate content by sharing links to 3rd-party relevant articles, videos, images, and more.
  • Retweet content that is relevant to your audience and your brand.
  • Share the latest apps or tools that you think is useful and a brief snippet why you think it's helpful.
  • Start a conversation by engaging with others by using @replies and mentions.
  • Participate in relevant trending #hashtags by writing a relevant spin on the hashtag to join the discussion.
  • Your behind-the-scenes information and photos (events you're attending, projects you're participating in, etc.)
  • Interesting factoids, quotes, compelling observations, and engaging ideas.

Consistently post a mix of the above tweet types regularly to maintain content diversity and follower interest. You can try any number of services, like Hootsuite, to preschedule content so you don't have to drop what your doing to tweet. However, make sure you get into your Home Twitter feed to see what's on everyone's minds at least once a day.

On Twitter? What tips do you have for balancing content with timeliness? Any particular Twitter do's and don'ts that you would like to share? Click here to share your comments, questions, and suggestions - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] Embrace the Chaos and Make Progress With Your Daily Goals

Embrace the Chaos and Make Progress With Your Daily Goals EzineArticles.com Logo

"Chaos is a friend of mine."
- Bob Dylan

Okay, wait just one minute. It's time to hit "pause."

Bad stress and overwhelming situations are not conducive to your productivity - especially when writing is involved. You can either let the chaos of your home and professional life get you down or perhaps even go through great lengths to beat it into submission.

However, there's another alterative that many people overlook: get more out of your day by embracing your inevitable schedule, including taking unexpected interruptions into stride.

These tips can help.

Acknowledge Your Chaos

Break down the chaotic situation by dissecting the reason why it is so hectic. Do any (or all) of these sound familiar?

  1. You're procrastinating.
  2. You're allowing yourself to be distracted.
  3. You're not good at communicating your intentions and goals.
  4. You're not working at a time when you're most productive.
  5. You're fighting it.

Tips to Embrace Your Chaos

Here's how to make progress in your goals despite the chaos:

  1. Procrastination: You've heard the old adage, "Procrastination is the thief of time." Avoid putting things off, especially your writing, or you're never going to get anything done. Create a to-do list daily and then pick 2-3 of the most important things on that list and do them first.

  2. Distractions: Most distractions come from you. If you're perpetuating your own distractions by constantly checking notifications, social media, email, etc. - learn to unplug. Assign yourself times to review and follow up on email. Get into the habit of only checking social media during periods of downtime. Turn on your devices' airplane mode (or turn them off if you can!) to hold calls and notifications to focus on important tasks and improve your productivity.

  3. Communicate: You'd be surprised how supportive your family, coworkers, and peers will be if you simply share your plans and the objective they will achieve. You don't have to go through a terrible amount of detail; merely share why it's important to you, perhaps the purpose it serves, if it benefits them in anyway, and what you need from them (even if it's just to be quiet).

  4. Timing: If you're not exactly mentally charged first thing in the morning or stumble through a post-lunch stupor, then working on a task that requires your focus isn't the best use of your time. Find your energy peaks of the day and capitalize on them by paying attention to the times of the day when you mentally power through challenging (and even unpleasant) tasks. Schedule your day around these peaks, but take care - don't use it as an excuse to procrastinate.

  5. Struggle: Embrace it. Don't ignore what's happening around you. It may be a much bigger or more important situation than you think and you shouldn't miss it. If you're overwhelmed and you feel anxious, angry, frustrated, or completely stressed, then it's time to take a mental break. Meditate or go outside. Pay attention to anything that is not what you're currently working on. Look - really look - and take it in without passing judgment. Just observe. This will help you realign your thinking (and attitude) as well as refresh your perspective.

Unless you live under a rock, you're likely to always have a little chaos in your life, but it doesn't have to be a bad thing. Adapt to the chaos and learn be flexible using these tips.

What tips do you have to live with chaos? Do you thrive on chaos? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] The Smart Way to Use a Location Name

The Smart Way
To Use a Location Name
EzineArticles.com Logo

Name Dropping a Location? Make it Exclusive

Geographic-targeted content or creating content based on a location can be a great way to reach a particular audience ... when done well.

Geographic-targeted articles done well can be helpful because they ...

  • speak to those people in or around that community
  • show travelers what may be in-store for them when visiting
  • help visitors and citizens understand the locality (i.e., markers, history, events, etc., about that location)

When geographic-targeted content isn't done well, it can be problematic. Scenarios include ...

  • stuffing location-based keywords into articles, hoping it will increase rank (it doesn't)
  • writing information about a location that's applicable to dozens of other locales (e.g., services available)
  • promising a location, but disappointing readers with vague, generic, or misleading information

3 Smart Ways to Use a Location Name

You don't have to be a travel writer to write about valuable geographic-targeted topics in your niche. Try these location-inspired angles in your next article:

  • Write about topics that may not be directly in your niche, but are certainly relevant to it. We typically don't live and work in silos, so we're bound to bump into one another (or into another business). Discussing businesses, services, or topics that are exclusive to your area and (even inadvertently) relate to your niche show your awareness and strong networking capabilities.

  • Share localized information. What's happening in your community? How does it affect your niche in the grand scheme of things? Present the local facts for backstory and then reflect how current events in that particular locale affect your niche in that area.

  • Write for the traveler or newcomer. You don't have to write a travel guide (unless that's your area of expertise of course)! Consider how you can provide location-exclusive information that's relevant to your niche for people or businesses moving to your town as well as think on what aspects of your niche tourists or visitors would be interested in.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself if the Location Is Appropriately Placed

If you're going to name a specific location, then you need to provide specific details about that location. Ask yourself the following questions to determine whether you are providing valuable details to warrant the location usage:

  • Does it pass the substitution test? If you're writing an article targeting local search, then use the substitution test to confirm that your article has enough location specific information. Simply substitute any other location name in the article title and body. Does the article still make sense? If so, then your article isn't quite unique enough to the locale.

  • Am I providing location-specific details that cannot be applied elsewhere? The article has content that covers what's unique about the location and the information can't be applied to any other locale.

  • Is it organic and the context uninterrupted by the location usage? "New York Dentists," "Seattle SEO," or anything of that ilk is simply unacceptable. It screams "I write for SEO."

Before you start writing, know exactly what makes your locale unique. Once you are able to pinpoint those unique details, you'll be on your way to writing the valuable geo-targeted article your readers want.

Do you write geographic-targeted content? If so, how do you ensure relevance to your niche and originality to the topic? Do you try to approach it from a different tone or style? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] Top Ways to Use Your Smartphone in Business

Top Ways to Use
Your Smartphone in Business
EzineArticles.com Logo

Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Smartphone?

Smartphones have been getting significantly "smarter" over the years and are powerful tools for business. With our current technology-driven society, it can be challenging to keep up with the latest gadgets and innovations. It's become an obsession, especially with smartphones, due to their potential for business growth and relationships. It doesn't matter if you've been using a smartphone or tablet for years, or if you are just jumping on the bandwagon, this technology is definitely here to stay.

In order to continue making an impact or reach your audience on a wider level, sometimes the only option is to discover how new technology can positively impact your business and embrace it. Use these smartphone tips to aid your efforts.

You Need: Stay in Touch With a Smartphone

  • Quick Contact - Your contacts and potential customers are at your fingertips. Whether it's via text, phone call, email or social media, you can connect with others instantly. Face-to-face communication is resurging with FaceTime, Google Talk and Skype, so you can promote or discuss business anywhere at any time.

  • Stay Connected to Social Media - Establishing a strong social media presence is important to connect with customers, other businesses, and fans. You have a social networking presence in the palm of your hand with a smartphone and this direct engagement can help alleviate feelings of disconnect with your audience. Social media is a free (or cheap way) to release information and you can quickly make a change to it wherever you are. You can use time that would otherwise be wasted while waiting or on a break.

  • Create Videos - Videos create a truly engaging experience for your readers and can be used to drive additional traffic. Email marketing campaigns have been known to include videos at the top of newsletters. When you are seen in the flesh, your readers may have more interest in your services. You don't need a professional camera to get your message across. Create videos for your company site and place them in different categories such as new releases, product demonstrations, or behind-the-scenes action. Add tips, detailed instructions, or even some humor to videos. Share your personality.

  • Create a Mobile-Friendly Website - Instead of hauling around a laptop or finding a computer to use when you're out of the office, a smartphone is a handy way to get immediate access online. Create a comfortable and viable mobile-friendly website that is accessible on all devices. You can incorporate text message advertising, mobile coupons, event invitations, special promotions, or alerts to promote your business. Customer support can be done on-the-fly to keep you in tune with your audience and their needs.

You Want: How Smartphones Can Help You Get Ahead

  • Get Real-Time Answers - Hindsight is 20/20; that seems to be the perfect definition of the knew-it-all-along effect after an event has happened. We've all had moments where we couldn't come up with an answer on the spot, and wished we had a search engine available to give us direction. Well, with internet access on our smartphones, you can pull up information immediately (and maybe stall in a conversation to get to it). Never get stumped again. Smartphones allow us to check on company information instantly, or get immediate solutions to questions. Use them to your advantage with your business, as you can be a walking encyclopedia or dictionary.

  • Personal Archive - Ideas can come out of the blue; they often arrive when we're unprepared to jot them down. It's not easy to remember the full extent of that attractive concept or plan you came up with earlier. However, there are countless ways to use your smartphone to save thoughts for later. Use a calendar or notes app to keep track of these moments. You can use a voice recorder for reminders or a rough draft of what you're thinking. Save digital copies of important documents. You can even take pictures and save them in email or for your mobile site.

  • Useful for Presentations - If you speak at conferences, introduce information at meetings, or use slideshow presentations, your smartphone can be a very useful device. You can create a presentation on a computer, then transfer it to your smartphone. The content can then be displayed through a PowerPoint presentation on a bigger display. Set a timer for your presentation that runs on your smartphone so you're fully aware of the duration. Your smartphone can also act as a remote to play or pause videos.

  • Last Minute Preparation - We spend so much of our lives waiting in line, stuck in traffic, or getting ready for a big event. Your smartphone can be a useful tool to help your preparation or make use of downtime. If you have a meeting to attend, keep key notes open on your phone to help you remain on track. It can also act as a mirror to ensure you look your best, and no suspicious objects are caught in your teeth.

As more and more people gain access to online information across the world, technology will continue to greatly advance. For those of us who rely on an online presence to build exposure to our products or services, it's that much more important to use every tool at our disposal. The presentation of information on a smartphone and how we access it day-to-day may shift in the future (Google Glass, smart contact lenses, etc.), but the fact remains: we will continue seeking information as fast as our technology allows us. It's an exciting time - explore the latest devices and discover new mobile applications that can help you drive your efforts further.

Do you use a smartphone or tablet? How do you use it in your everyday life? What are your favorite apps to stay up-to-date and in touch? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] Become a Better Manager: Writing, Excuses, and Solutions

Become a Better Manager: Writing, Excuses, and Solutions EzineArticles.com Logo

Using Every Excuse in the Book NOT to Write?

You're a manager. Perhaps you may not be the person responsible for controlling a company, but you're the manager answerable to your own professional and personal success - including writing.

Own that title: Manager. Allow it to permeate your mindset. Take control.

Next: Become an EFFECTIVE manager. Actively pursue your goals, alleviate stress, be happier, and move closer to achieving your dreams.

I know. You're thinking, "Yeah, but it's not that easy." So what? It's life. Is it supposed to be easy? Would you feel a sense of pride or accomplishment in doing it if it was easy? To quote Marie Curie, pioneer physicist and chemist:

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.

Have the confidence and perseverance to cultivate your gift by becoming a better manager of it.

Excuses Holding You Back and Effective Solutions

Problem: "I'm overwhelmed ..."

Effective Manager Solution:
Trim the fat. Identify your goals and then list your priorities by importance, beginning with those that actually need your attention and then those that are superfluous to your goal. Lose the tasks that are not required or contribute the least value. And be honest with yourself. Are you really overwhelmed? Perhaps you're overcommitted and may need to practice saying "I can't at this time, but can I take a rain check?" Maybe your vigilant watch over Twitter and Facebook throughout the day can be limited to 20 minutes (once a day). Track your time for a period of a week and determine what you're doing with your time as well as where you can turn areas of low value into great value.

Problem: "I end up procrastinating ..."

Effective Manager Solution:
I'd like to begin this with a "you can do it" sentiment, but you and I both know that's not going to work. You lack motivation. If you're really procrastinating to an extent that's affecting your ability to work toward your dreams, than there may be two areas that you need to address: (1) Are you bingeing on technology like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, BuzzFeed, Netflix, Podcasts, YouTube, etc.? It may be time for a digital detox. (2) Is it really something you want to do? You should be passionate about what you do and what you want to write about, so write about those topics that fire you up. Reevaluate your goals and plans.

Problem: "People ... ugh!"

Effective Manager Solution:
Co-workers, friends, family - people can be seem like an obstacle in your path. Change your thinking: These same people can quite possibly be there to SUPPORT you on your journey. Can you delegate tasks to them? Can you use a negative experience as an anecdote for a great article to share with readers? Can you brainstorm with them or even co-write with them?

Problem: "I'm afraid of being judged negatively ..."

Effective Manager Solution:
Criticism is a part of anything that is in the public eye: articles, desserts, movies, fashion, etc. You can use criticism to your advantage. Listen to what is being said and accept it. Avoid being defensive and consider the source: Are they a respected individual who is well-informed on the topic or a toxic hate-monger? If you made a mistake, then be gracious: admit the mistake and move on. Life's too short and it's not supposed to be easy.

Problem: "I'm not sure it's a good idea ..."

Effective Manager Solution:
Do your due diligence: research, ask questions, etc. Ultimately, you can do all of the research and still not be entirely sure whether it's a good idea or not. There's one absolute: You'll never know if you don't try. Have the confidence to make a few mistakes and have the perseverance to achieve your goals.

Being able to manage these problems can turn a very complicated dance into a beautiful waltz. You're the manager of your writing, professional, and personal goals; start acting like one. Seize this opportunity now and start dancing your waltz today.
