[EzineArticles] Are You Killing Your Writing Success?

Are You Killing Your Writing Success? EzineArticles.com Logo

On a Writing Hiatus?

Come back before it's too late! Your authority as an Expert Author is dependent on the frequency with which you write and publish articles.

Perhaps you've taken a break from your writing efforts because ...

  • you thought you published enough articles
  • you had extenuating circumstances, such as an illness
  • you couldn't find the time to write
  • you didn't know what to write

Whatever the reason, you could be sabotaging every effort you put into writing by not writing. By not keeping up with your writing and publishing efforts ...

  • your audience will believe you have nothing else to offer and you pose little value to them
  • your articles will lose traction and relevance causing your traffic and exposure to taper off
  • your authority will lessen because you're no longer an active voice in your niche

I get it. Not everyone can dedicate 8 hours to writing (I certainly can't), nor could many authors who made it big. Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men author John Steinbeck ran a fish hatchery. Celebrated American poet William Carlos Williams was a doctor. Horror and Sci-fi/Fantasy extraordinaire Stephen King was a laborer at an industrial laundry.

Not everyone has the luxury to spend all day writing. Big deal. Those who want to succeed make the time (even if that time is a fraction than what's ideal).

If you're pressed for time, here's a strategy that can work for anyone balancing writing with their other priorities:

Dedicate at Least 20 Minutes Daily to Writing

1. Determine What You Will Write

Before you sit down for your 20-minute session, decide what you're going to do. This can be established while you're doing some other task that doesn't require your full attention, such as washing dishes, making copies, or even a bathroom break. Are you going to outline your next article, plan your upcoming editorial calendar, write your first draft, or edit the draft you wrote during your 20 minutes? Having a plan before you sit down will help you focus and get more out of your time.

2. Write, Write, Write

Eliminate distractions, turn off notifications, and close the door to write (or plan, research, etc.). If during your writing session you suddenly think of something that's unrelated to what you're working on, then write it down to remind yourself later. A simple keyword will do, just don't lose your pace or focus by pursuing the unrelated thought.

3. Stick to It

It may be difficult to adjust, but it's important that you stick to your goal to write 20 minutes every day. You can think of it in two ways: 1) It's like training for a marathon - you can't put off your training and expect to be able run well and without doing damage the big day. 2) Initially, writing daily will be like breaking a bad habit (in this case: not writing). It's going to be an adjustment and you're going to look for every excuse to give in and not write, but stick to your goal and write!

20 minutes a day adds up. In 7 days, you will have spent a minimum of 2 hours and 20 minutes. If in this time you only write one article per week, then celebrate it! It's one more article than what you had before and it will help you stay in touch with your audience, increase your exposure, and maintain your authority in your niche.

It's not too late to pick up where you left off in your article writing and content marketing efforts - start now! Spend 20 minutes today to build toward your success.

Take Advantage of Your
Expert Author Status
EzineArticles.com Logo

Publish to Gain Authority and Proven Credibility

You could choose to solely post content on your own website and wait for the visitors to come (emphasis on the word "wait").

Or you could choose to be more assertive and proactive with your brand by publishing high-quality, unique content both on and off your website via article writing, guest blog writing, column writing, and more.

Publishing content on a trusted platform helps you build exposure, enhance credibility, increase connectivity, and foster authority. Combine these great benefits together and you'll have packaged your platform into a reliable brand that will drive highly-targeted traffic back to your blog or website.

Take these great benefits a step further by helping yourself to the advantages and prestige you gain from publishing: share your Expert Author status by adding your EzineArticles Expert Author Banner to your website.

Here's why: You have a limited time to catch the attention of your readers and to hurdle their skepticism. Readers want the best information to meet their needs, so they're going to go with the source who has the credentials that are transparent and easily verified.

EzineArticles' Expert Author Banners serve as a badge of prestige symbolizing your credibility. Whether visitors choose to click your Expert Author Banner to view (and verify) your EzineArticles Expert Author profile or not, you'll have earned their trust. And their trust combined with your originality and a dash of credibility is what gets conversions, engagement, and traffic.

How to Add an Author Banner to Your Website or Blog

  • Log in to your My.EzineArticles.com account
  • Select the Resources tab and then select "Author Banners"
  • Copy the HTML code of the corresponding banner you would like to use
  • Paste the code into your website or blog's editor (e.g., settings, design, etc.)

There's nothing to it. All it takes is a few minutes of your time (or your web designer's time) to easily build trust, credibility, and traffic. Add your EzineArticles Expert Author Banner to your website today!

[EzineArticles] Creating an Effective Call to Action that Gets Results

Creating an Effective Call to Action that Gets Results EzineArticles.com Logo

14 Tips to Write Powerful Calls to Action

Your time is precious, so it always strikes me as odd when Expert Authors don't dedicate a little more time to the call to action in their articles.

A call to action is a pitch to motivate your audience to take action. Calls to action commonly appear in the form of buttons or graphics on a website. In article writing, a text-based call to action occurs twice in article submissions: 1) in the summary where the reader is compelled to dive into the article and 2) in the Resource Box where the reader is encouraged to visit your highly relevant website.

In her article, How to Write a Call to Action - 7 Tips for Creating a Call to Action That Works, marketing and media relations specialist Megan Tsai states:

"Marketers should always be asking themselves one question: 'What's next?' After all, you invest significant time and money into every marketing effort. But if you don't include an effective call to action (CTA), you'll have little to show for your work."

To help you create a powerful call to action that delivers, we've highlighted Megan's insights and added a few of our own to provide you with the following 14 tips!

Megan Tsai's 7 Tips for Creating a Call to Action That Works

  • Create a logical next step ... that will be comfortable for the prospect and in line with the information they are viewing.
  • Capture the lead ... For example if a prospect is reading one of your organization's blog entries, the call to action may be to download a free white paper on a related topic in exchange for an email address.
  • Play up the benefits ... For instance, the call to action for your email newsletter sign up might be "Stay up to date on industry news in just minutes a week."
  • Consider the context [by making] sure your call to action is in sync with the content around it.
  • Place it right ... make sure the call to action doesn't interrupt the flow of the content.
  • Let it stand out ... from the surrounding copy. The goal is to draw the prospect's eye without being annoying or distracting.
  • Deliver what you promise ... a prospect following through with [your call to action] should get what you promised quickly and easily.
7 More Methods to Implement in Your Call to Action

In addition to Megan's above tips, we'd like to add an additional 7 methods to create a great call to action:

  • Be relevant by ensuring your call to action is related to the article.
  • Create a sense of urgency. For example: "On my website you will find time-saving resources" vs. "Stop wasting time! Subscribe now for free tips that will save you time" provides urgency.
  • Use active language. For example: "You can try it for free" is a suggestion vs. "Try it for free" is a stronger command that will provide better results.
  • Provide incentive that tells readers they're getting a bargain, such as 2 for the price of 1 or subscribe to a newsletter and receive a free ebook.
  • Keep choices simple by providing one call to action in your summary (compel them to read the article) and one call to action in your Resource Box (compel them to visit your website) in order to avoid overwhelming your readers.
  • Make your call to action exclusive by tying in your UVP (unique value proposition).
  • Make your readers feel special or rewarded. For example: "Visit Your-Company-Name.com to pamper yourself with VIP priority."

Try any or all of these powerful call-to-action tips to test what works for your audience and your platform. You'll soon be on your way to incredible results that build your exposure and drive traffic back to your blog or website.

What other elements are important to writing a great call to action? Click here to let us know in the comments section of this post online - we'd love to hear from you!

Don't forget to visit Megan's original article for an extended description of her great call-to-action tips and scroll down to the Get Involved section to share a comment or question.

[EzineArticles] Guide to Entertaining: Writing Informative Content with a Creative Twist

Guide to Entertaining:
Writing Informative Content
With a Creative Twist
EzineArticles.com Logo

Take Time to Be Creative

Anyone can have the perfect setup to entertain with the hip "this" and the trendy "that" to please guests. However, most parties will fall flat if your heart isn't in it because you're too distracted by achieving perfection. It's a hard lesson, but we all learn it:

You're not going to please everyone.

Once you get over that hurdle, you'll relax and allow your creativity to become the driving force behind a party that will be remembered for a long time.

The same is true for writing. Anyone can write a litany of information, but that content is dull and uninteresting without creativity. It's a great writer who can channel their creativity by taking a simple topic and adding the details readers love to make their writing engaging, compelling, and downright entertaining. Let's face it, a water glass with an umbrella is a lot more fun than just a water glass.

Being Creative Is Better

One half of writing is information, while the other half is creativity. It's creativity that delivers results because it:

  • Makes you human and relates to readers.
  • Increases your article's ability to be amplified.
  • Attracts visitors to your website and keeps them there.
  • Channels your passions or interests so it's a lot more fun to write.

How to Be More Creative

Creativity needs focus and distance. There's a perception that writers must wait for a creative fit of genius before they can write. If you're like most writers, these creative fits are few and far between. The reality is that it takes practice, dedication, and the right environment to focus on your writing. In turn, this focus will train you to constantly see through a writing lens. First, harness your creative power by breaking your writing process into 3 stages:

  1. Brainstorming
  2. Writing
  3. Editing

Each stage helps you organize your thoughts, shut up your inner critic, and apply creativity every step of the way. As you execute the stages, take a bird's-eye-view by giving yourself and the topic a little distance. This will help you:

  • Increase your ability to problem solve.
  • Be more objective without being emotionally detached.
  • Vary your approach from a variety of angles and perspectives.

5 Creative Exercises to Be More Entertaining in Your Writing

Once you've established your topic, you can inject a little personable creativity with the following strategies:

  • Read: Read everything - from literature's best to the latest news. By reading, you'll notice stylistic trends, storytelling methods, and much more that you can try out in your writing to find your engaging voice.
  • Compare: Attempt to compare opposites. Consider angles like before vs. after, monochromatic vs. multi-color, with the latest technology vs. without, etc. This will help you realize different solutions to various problems.
  • Age: Channel your inner child to be more imaginative and ask all of those basic "why" questions. Alternately, consider approaches of older generations and ask the same "why" questions through the lens of the shared experiences of each generation.
  • Diagnose: Consider not the symptoms, but the cause of a topic and then find a solution for the cause. An irate customer, for example, is a symptom. Pinpointing the symptom's cause, such as a poor product or customer service, will help you remedy the issue.
  • Rebel: Go against the grain with an angle that benefits readers. Consider a different stance by being the devil's advocate and rebel. "5 Reasons Why Justin Bieber's Platform Is More Successful Than Yours," for example, goes against the inclination to dislike Justin Bieber for generations above the age of 25.

Likely the most common form (and most successful) creative exercise you will find is descriptive reflection. Either through brainstorming or daydreaming, allow yourself to think of past personal and professional experiences. This could include sage advice (e.g., "My grandfather once told me ...") or new realizations. Recall or think of hearty and hardy specifics and then reflect back on your topic, pulling the engaging details that will bring your reader home.

Set yourself apart from other writers by being more creative in your original writing approach using the above tips. You and your readers will find it much more entertaining and rewarding.

How are you creative in your writing? What exercises do you try to be more creative? Click here to share them with us in the comments section of this post online - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] Losing Readers? Keep Them on Your Website By Improving User Experience

Losing Readers? Keep Them on Your Website By Improving User Experience EzineArticles.com Logo

Your Website Needs More Than Curb Appeal

Spammy looking websites are a HUGE turn off for visitors.

Let's say you're looking for a new home and you find a house that has amazing curb appeal. The description depicts a welcoming neighborhood and all of the amenities you need and want. In fact, it's so inspiring that you begin to envision plans for each room: dinner parties, cozy reading nooks, and more. You excitedly arrange a tour to inspect the house with the realtor.

As you enter the house, your reality shatters like a brick thrown through a glass window. You wonder if somehow someone has stolen your promising vision and exchanged it with a house with leaking windows, a roof that's badly in need of repairs, a cracked foundation, a condemned furnace, pests - lots of pests - and you can only imagine so many more unseen issues.

If you're like most people, you head for the exit as fast as you possibly can.

Like buying a home, it often takes much more than the curb appeal of a great article to maintain a visitor's attention on a website. An article can build up your platform by promoting your authority as a leading source in your niche, but your website needs to maintain their interest.

Provide a great user experience and hold onto their attention by giving the design of your website a little love with these 7 tips.

7 Tips to Improving Your Website's Appeal

  • Navigation - Your website's curb appeal also needs functional design. Be visually appealing and ensure everything has an appropriate place on your website for easy navigation. Avoid placing too many calls to action via excessive ads, links, etc. by ensuring your visitor clearly knows where to go because each page is unique and the website flows consistently.

  • Content - Is your website ready to meet your visitor's cravings for content? Ebooks, articles, newsroom, connected social media, newsletters, etc. - provide fresh, quality, transparent, and original content. From press releases to video to competitions, there are countless mediums or strategies to create a content rich website. Test them to find those that best reach and engage your audience.

  • Contact - In case of an "emergency," help your visitors contact you. Have you ever hunted for a company's phone number, email, mailing address, or at least a contact form, only to give up? Put yourself in your visitors' shoes. If they want to contact you, that is huge! Include a Contact Us page with the necessary information so you provide a good user experience and start a healthy conversation.

  • Search - Many content-oriented websites have tons of content and it can frazzle a visitor's composure if they have to click excessively to reach the content they need. Include accurate search fields in your website design to help visitors quickly find what they're looking for - don't forget to test it, as common search terms that come back with 0 results can be frustrating. Make sure it works!

  • Social - Be inviting with a comfortable "social place" for visitors to meet. Social media gains more traction with users every day - list the social media sites you're active on so your visitors can more easily connect with you on their terms. Some of your visitors may be specific and prefer to communicate with you or your brand via a different site, so having these sites listed on your pages is a must.

  • Reviews and Testimonials - Provide visitors with reviews and testimonials to help increase trust and your authority. Ask customers, clients, or "neighbors" (your peers) to provide reviews and testimonials of your organization, product, and services - it never hurts to ask and it's great feedback that you can use to improve your organization.

  • Blog - Allow your style and personality to shine with more personalized tips and insights on your blog to make your information, services, or products memorable. A blog also helps visitors open up to discussion, helps you find out what they need or want, and deepens their engagement by providing opportunities to say, "Great points! It's great you're discussing this, I have the perfect product for you!"

Study your website and consider the user experience from your visitor's perspective. Do you (as a visitor) feel comfortable? Is there enough engaging content? Will you want to return? If not, then try any or all of the above tips to improve the design of your website to make it user friendly and maintain the interest of your visitors.

What tips would you add to our list? Click here to let us know in the comments section of this post online - we'd love to hear from you!
