You did it! A reader has read your quality, informative article from title to conclusion. Now what?

Did you provide an effective call-to-action (CTA) in your Resource Box? If you didn't, you may be missing out on an incredible opportunity to foster a relationship with your readers and drive traffic to your blog or website.

A CTA is a pitch to your readers to urge or motivate them to take immediate action. When effectively used, a CTA can generate incredible results and increase your return on time investment.

Use these tips to write an effective and alluring call-to-action!

  • Desire - Readers are motivated by an empathetic link. Consider what problem they want to solve or what desire they want to achieve. Lead your CTA with it.
     
  • Convenience - Clearly prescribe a product or a service that solves the reader's problem or helps them achieve their goal.
     
  • Incentive - Encourage your reader to act by providing an enticement, e.g. a discount, a free gift, or a free download. To make it timely, use urgent language like "act now" to add a sense of immediacy.
     
  • Simplicity - Often, the simplest design produces the best results. Succinctly tell your reader what you want them to do in one direct action.
     
  • Link - A combination of 1 link in anchor text and 1 URL link often produces the best results. It also ensures your original URL will be preserved should your article be picked up by another publisher.

Next, watch out for these top 3 call-to-action blunders.

  • Premature Placement - Many experts will place their CTA too early, i.e. add the CTA to their summary or in their article body. Recall that your article should be non-self-serving and entirely information-based to benefit your reader. Your CTA belongs in your article's Resource Box, because it's very nature is promotional. "Give" in your article and "take" in your Resource Box.
     
  • Negative Blunders - Attitude is contagious. A negative CTA could result in a negative reaction. A positive CTA is more inclined to result in a positive reaction. Ensure your CTA conveys a positive message.
     
  • Pesky Keywords - Cluttering the CTA with a cloud of keywords, a list of websites, or advertising every product hoping to ensnare as many readers as possible will weaken your credibility. Save keywords for the Keywords field of your article submission form.

Finally, as obvious as it may seem, don't forget to include a call-to-action! Don't miss out on this great opportunity to drive traffic to your blog or website and increase your return on time investment. Give your readers a route to continue their journey with you by including a finely-tuned call-to-action in the Resource Box of all your articles.

By empowering your readers, you will increase your credibility and exposure, as well as your reader's trust and confidence in your platform. In turn, this increases the likelihood they will return to your platform, try your products or services, sign up for your newsletters, and much more.

Here are 3 ways to rev up your articles to empower your readers and ensure your efforts don't backfire.

3 Methods to Empower Your Readers

1. Lose (or At Least Loosen) the Tie

A formal writing style can often stifle the reader's ability to connect with the author because the author's personality isn't present in a formal presentation of ideas. To connect with your readers, try an informal, conversational article writing style. This style often includes sharing personal anecdotes or humor in a more personable, casual manner.

A conversational article writing style doesn't include using SMS text language (e.g. LOL I <3 U), nor does it entail taking a break on proofreading your articles for comprehension and grammar. Confusing language and poor grammar doesn't build relationships; it isolates readers with the opposite effect: alienation. Use clear language and proper grammar to increase your ability to empower your readers.

2. Measure Article Density

To measure the density of your article, consider the mass (the core of your message) and volume (the amount of words you've used to convey the message). Dense articles are often overwhelming to readers, whereas thin or light articles are often rejected by readers for vague and unoriginal content.

Balance the mass by limiting your articles to 3-5 key points per article (save additional points for other articles), incorporating lists, or using bolded headers. Limit the volume of your article to 500-700 words, and if you must, try not to go over 1,000 words.

3. More "You" and "Yours"

Ensure your articles are reader-centric, i.e. they should feel the article revolves completely around them. Give your readers a sense of immediacy and place them directly in the article by using more active, descriptive language as well as talk directly with the reader by using "you" and "yours." Ensure the content in your articles is in-tune with your reader's needs and is relevant. Also, avoid dropping a promotional bomb that makes readers scatter like a scalded cat.

Finally, target your reader's expectations by delivering on every aspect of your title, summary, article body, and resource box. And no last minute additions of "Oh! I almost forgot!" Properly incorporate, deliver, and seal the deal with quality.

Aim to inspire by showing your audience the possibilities and empower them to take action by imparting your incredible knowledge. Use the above tips to write more engagingly, to create a more memorable platform, and to empower yourself in the process.

Punctuation can be difficult to get right. As one Expert Author put it, "how can anyone learn English when colon means a punctuation mark and the lower part of the digestive tract?"

The colon is more commonly used to introduce a list, a quotation, or to explain the preceding part of the sentence. The colon is also used in declarations, proclamations, formal salutations, and more. It can be a fun little piece of punctuation, but most authors tend to steer clear of its formality and confusing usage by exchanging it for the period or the more exciting hyphen.

A colon is often used to introduce a list or series.

Colons are also used for announcements, clarification, and elaboration.

A colon can be used to join two independent (complete) sentences when the second sentence amplifies the first sentence.

Don't use a colon to separate a verb from its complement or separate a preposition from its object.

Proper punctuation protects us from: appearing spammy, losing credibility, and confusion. (Incorrect)

Finally, there's always a space after a colon (unless indicating time, chapters, or legal citations). Also, with the exception of proper nouns, it isn't a fixed rule whether you must capitalize the word after a colon.

Anyone will tell you: Success is not an overnight endeavor.

When you're traveling across country, in unfamiliar territory, you watch for road signs to help you navigate to your destination. "Exit 181" may not seem like much, but it's a milestone in your journey - you're almost there.

Article writing has these signs too; however, they aren't your typical roadmaps or highway markers. If they were, these milestones would likely include signs like "Patience at Next Right" to remind you that success often requires endurance. If you find yourself searching for a sign to help you navigate out of writing stale content, "Detour Ahead to Avoid Repetitive Content" is just on the horizon.

We've gathered the top 3 obstacles our most successful Expert Authors have met and will share how they overcame those obstacles to reach their destination: Success.

Slippery When Complacent

Whether it's lack of time or loss of momentum, complacency may settle in. This may include a lack of proofreading, not fact-checking, and using disreputable shortcuts. The attitude of "Meh, it's good enough," is the number 1 credibility and success killer. You don't need to write earth-shattering content that could win a Nobel Prize, but you should enjoy what you do - readers can sense it.

Strive to be engaged. Find those areas of your niche that you are passionate about or fascinate you. Stay up-to-date and maintain your authority in your niche by getting involved: Dig deeper into issues to find the truth, kindle discussion with peers in your niche, and ask your audience questions. Continue building on your experience and cultivate more unique insight. If you're engaged, your readers will be too.

Patience at Next Right

Having patience can be tough. Everyone would like success immediately; however, it rarely works that way. A musician practices. An athlete trains. An author writes. The best way to build your credibility platform and amplify your exposure is to keep writing and keep developing those article writing skills to reach and engage your audience.

Set aside time to write and then dedicate your full attention to the task to maximize your time. Organize your ideas and then begin. Your style and skills are a work in progress - keep refining, keep building, and keep up your momentum. Have patience with your success - it's just around the corner.

Audience Crossing

Are your articles relevant to your audience? Writing articles irrelevant to readers is like barreling through a pedestrian crosswalk.

Ask yourself: "So what?" with each article. Every one of your articles should matter and influence someone else positively. Leave your ego at the door and reread what you've written to consider how your audience will approach the topic.

Also, consider the keywords you are using. For instance, "write an article" has less competition than "writing articles," but they both have the same search rank. If I use "write an article," I have a better shot at actually reaching readers. Incorporate keywords naturally, so your articles read fluidly and reach your audience.

Derivative Roundabout Ahead

If you find yourself writing and rewriting the same topic, your readers will view you as a one trick pony, i.e. you're only knowledgeable on one topic.

Overcome this by expanding your niche and then discovering what information your audience wants. Approach topics from different angles and consider exploring areas you've always been curious about to expand your expertise. Either way, you will discover you have a lot more to say than you initially thought.

Broaden your horizons by broadening your niche and then narrow down areas of your niche in your articles to target specific segments of your audience. Keep up with your reader's interests! Write fresh articles based on new events in your niche to keep your articles relevant to your readers.

As you round your next turn in your article writing efforts, remember this: You can't say you're an expert on horses just because you've rode a horse once. Success takes practice, development, and respect for yourself and your audience. Use these tips next time you're feeling a little complacent, losing patience, letting your ego lead, or find yourself stuck in a topic. Leave these obstacles in the dust and get on the road to success.

The Old Way Versus the New Way

Whether you consider yourself "old school" or "new school," this article template gives you a format to share your argument with the world.

In just about every niche, you can find members of the "old school" who like to reminisce about times past.

At the same time, there are members of the "new school" who, no matter what the cost or benefit, remain on the cutting edge and are ready to test out new products and procedures.

So how do you find the balance between "old school" and "new school"?

It's as simple as considering how times have changed. Consider these three questions:

  1. Are there any areas of your niche you think: "Back in my day"?
  2. Are there any areas in your niche that have become more complicated as the industry has evolved?
  3. Are there any areas in your niche that have become easier due to advances in technology or resources?

Once you've considered how times have changed (for better or for worse) you need to fully develop a point of view and get writing using this template!

  • Open with a Story - Tell a very short story about the way things were in the past. Depending on the argument you plan on making, you may paint a positive or a negative picture of the past.
     
  • Explain the New Environment - Introduce how things are now.
     
  • List the Changes - Point out specific things that have changed. Make each new item another item in the list.
     
  • Give Your Analysis - Describe how you feel about the changes. Either endorse the changes or explain why the old way is better. Conclude by summarizing your main points one more time.

Use this article format to explain how times have changed in your niche. Satisfy nostalgia while looking for relevant and present solutions for your audience.

You may even get an idea of how things will evolve in the future. Forecast changes in your niche by using the Predictions Article Template.

Christine Larsen "I love the templates"

I find I love the templates and have a file with copies of all of them. Sometimes I go through them and put Post-it notes on individual templates with ideas/titles/themes - ready for possible development into an article ... or sometimes not. But that's OK, because it often stirs a memory or fits somehow with an opinion I hold, or an idea that's still deep within my 'think tank.'
