[EzineArticles] Turbo-Charge Your Article Writing Efforts

Turbo-Charge Your
Article Writing Efforts

Why Add Journaling To Your Mix?

You might be familiar with the acronym WIIFM (What's In It For Me?). When it comes to journaling, there are plenty of reasons to add this time-tested strategy to your repertoire.

For starters, journaling allows you to capture your emotions on paper in a way that no other activity can.

Picture this scenario ...

You write in the parenting niche and you are walking through the park on a nice, warm day. You see a father interacting with his daughter, teaching her a new game to play.

You can tell it's a special moment for the father/daughter and it sparks your emotions to write. You have your computer with you. You take it out of your backpack, turn it on and you wait 3 minutes for it to boot up. You take another minute or two to open the program you want to write in, and now you're ready to record your thoughts.

Things have likely changed in that 3-5 minute span. The emotions that compelled you to write in the first place might very well be gone, not to mention the father and daughter.

If you had a journal with you instead of the computer, you could have captured the situation and the emotions that came along with it while you were in the moment. Think of the power that could bring to your article writing efforts.

Regular journaling allows the passion you feel for your niche to be infused into the content you deliver to readers, which allows you to build a stronger connection with them. Once your readers feel an emotional connection to you, they're much more likely to follow you back to your website and trust you as an authority in your niche, accomplishing one of your primary goals as an article writer. Additionally, you'll also see a noticeable difference in the quality of your content with all the extra writing practice.

When you physically put a pen to paper, it causes different chemical reactions to take to place in your brain that couldn't be duplicated by typing your thoughts on a computer. Many companies have employees write their goals out with a pen and paper because studies have shown that your brain takes ownership of those thoughts more effectively that way.

For more great benefits you'll receive from journaling, check out this Blog post: Warning: May Cause An Increase In Productivity

[EzineArticles] From My Desk To Yours - 27th Edition

From My Desk To Yours - 27th Edition EzineArticles.com Logo

GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL AND INFORMATIVE
By: Penny, EzineArticles Managing Editor

Were you recently on the receiving end of an email alerting you that one of your articles was placed in Problem Status for a lack of informative and original content?

This problem area has become one of the most common reasons for article rejection as we have expanded the types of situations when it's appropriate.

In total, there are 5 different reasons why an article is placed in Problem Status for a "Lack of Original and Informative Content." Any of these 5 reasons will trigger the email and the article will be on your account, waiting for changes and resubmission.

Top 5 Reasons For "Lack of Original and Informative Content" Email

Here are the top 5 reasons that an article will be rejected using the "Lack of Original and Informative Content" explanation:

1. The article has too many quoted sections.

Authors who write articles with a lot of quotes from outside sources are showing off the expertise of those other authors, not their own. Your readers want to hear more about the information that YOU have to offer them.

Our platform is the perfect place for you to share your unique content, not collect and present someone else's, so any more than about 5 lines of quoted text is too much quoted material.

Remedy: Beef up your article to include more of your own unique content and less from others.

2. The article body is too short.

Sometimes, we see authors place the information that's intended for the Resource Box at the bottom of the body and leave the actual Resource Box blank just to get over the minimum word count hump.

Those articles may make it through the initial computer-based verification process, but our human editors will catch the ones that slip through. Any content that is slightly promotional or quoted from another source is not counted in the total word count.

Remedy: Add more valuable content to your article, and place the author information in the Resource Box where it belongs.

3. The article doesn't have content that's unique.

The first time you share a valuable gem of information in an article, your stock as a credible author of 100% unique material goes up. If you take that same gem of information, reword it without adding anything new and submit the rehashed article, that second article isn't unique. In fact, it even devalues the original high-quality article.

Rehashing old content and trying to fraudulently submit it as 100% original is a very bad idea.

Remedy: Instead, start "from scratch" with every new article. Find a new topic that's related to your unique niche, then write an article on that topic and use the same links. You'll increase your readership while feeding a similar audience with the information they need.

4. The article tells a story without expressing a point or moral to the story.

Journal entry-type writing can be very valuable and worthwhile to share in some cases. A story can provide a wonderful background for a point or philosophical statement.

In other cases, it can seem like endless rambling without a clear message.

Remedy: If you choose to submit a story, always ask yourself, "What is the moral or point of this story?" If none exists, you'll either need to build a moral into it or scrap the idea altogether.

5. The article has content that doesn't stand alone without the Resource Box link.

In this case, the article teases information, but all of the value is packed in a self-serving link at the end of the article. When there isn't any real, substantial content for the reader to sink his or her teeth into in the article, that provides a very poor user experience.

The reader should be able to get everything that they expect out of the article. They shouldn't have to jump from your article to your website to get the full picture of what you're trying to say.

Remedy: All content should be robust and stand alone. Any links should be supplementary and not necessary to get your point across.

If, after checking for each of these problems, you are still left with questions about a specific article, feel free to contact our Member Support Team for further clarification.

In the coming weeks, new changes will be made to most sections of the Editorial Guidelines. We are adding far greater detail to this and other areas of the guidelines in the hopes of reducing any possible confusion for the reason an article is in Problem Status. We've taken our members pain points into consideration in this rework, and we expect that you will be pleased.

Feel free to visit this post online and leave a comment to share your thoughts or experiences with the "Lacks Original and Informative Content" Problem Status.

[EzineArticles] 2 Minute Approval Tips: HTML Tag Rules

2 Minute Approval Tips:
HTML Tag Rules
EzineArticles.com Logo

Episode 14 of the "2 Minute Approval Tips" Video Series

This series is designed to help you get your articles approved on the first submission. In today's tip, we focus on HTML code, the backbone of the Internet, and how to use a basic level of HTML knowledge to advance your article writing.

The basic style and format HTML tags give you an opportunity to take control of the structure of your articles and put emphasis on the important words. Remember, though, that just because you CAN use HTML tags doesn't mean you SHOULD fill every single article with formatting tags or try to make every keyword bold. Watch this video to discover which HTML tags are allowed in articles and how to use them.

Downloadable Versions:
WMV Format     MOV Format     MV4 Format     MP3 Format

A Quick Recap of the 14th "2 Minute Approval Tip"

  • Text Styling

    • BOLD = <b>BOLD</b>
    • ITALICS = <i>ITALICS</i>
    • UNDERLINE = <u>UNDERLINE</u>

  • Formatting That's Allowed

    • <ol> or <ul>

      1. Makes numbered (<ol>) or bulleted (<ul>) lists
      2. Use <li>Item</li> to designate each item in the list
      3. End the list using either </ol> or </ul>
      4. If any of the list items are long (2+ lines), you can add a <br> tag, which adds a line break between each list item
    • <blockquote> - Indents a section to separate the words of the author with the words of the quotation.

    • <pre> - Displays text in a fixed-width format (usually Courier) and preserves spaces and line breaks.

  • Formatting That's NOT Allowed

    • <p>
    • <javascript>
    • <img>
    • <hr>
    • <h1>, <h2>, etc.

  • WYSIWYG Editor - If all this talk about HTML kind of makes your head spin, feel free to use the "What You See Is What You Get Editor" (WYSIWYG). With this editor you create your articles just like any other word processor. No HTML required.

If you're looking for more training on HTML, check out HTML Basics for the Expert Author. In that video, we quickly show you how to add HTML to improve the appearance, clarity and functionality of your articles.

[EzineArticles] How to Avoid Sounding Like a Salesperson

How to Avoid Sounding
Like a Salesperson
EzineArticles.com Logo

7 Tips to Avoid Being Overly Promotional in Your Articles

Readers visit your articles because they're seeking out expert insights into your niche. And let's face it, they're not prepared for an all-out sales blitz right when they open an article. If that's what they get, they're going to be instantly turned off and click away because there are plenty of other expert sources they can seek out.

Now, there's a right time and place for promotional copy - down in the Resource Box of your article and on the landing page of your website - once you've built up your trust and credibility as an expert. But, if your articles themselves start sounding like an infomercial for yourself or your company, you run the risk of alienating potential readers and even having your articles rejected for publication.

The EzineArticles Editorial Guidelines state: "To be qualified for our site, your article MUST NOT be a press release, advertisement, sales letter, promotional copy, or blatant and excessive self-promotion or hype."

Watch this video to discover how to uphold this standard by delivering great content without sounding like a salesperson.

Downloadable Versions:
WMV Format     MOV Format     MV4 Format     MP3 Format

Avoiding Promotional Content in Articles

  • "For only $9.99, you can get ..." - This is clearly salesmanship and it doesn't provide any unique and insightful value to your reader. It's just sales copy; the type of writing you'd expect to see in a newspaper or magazine ad. Please, don't use straight sales copy in your articles.

  • Name Dropping - Your company, your product, and your name belong in the Resource Box, not the body of the article. Use the article body to provide tips, tricks and analysis. Remember, if the information is helpful, they'll go looking for more.

  • "In another article I wrote, titled ..." - Promoting or linking to self-serving locations should also be avoided. Instead of focusing on what will benefit you the most, like including a self-serving link early in the article body, focus on sharing information right in the article that will benefit your reader most. The reader shouldn't have to go to your website to get the main points of the article.

  • Recommendations and Unbiased Reviews - Some readers look for product reviews to gauge the effectiveness of products on the market. If you're not associated with the product, you can give an unbiased review as long as you don't link directly to the product's website.

  • Using An Outline - Once you pick a topic, consider writing an outline that you can follow. If you stick to the outline, you'll avoid going off-topic and risk sounding "salesy."

  • Sticky Intro - Create titles and introductions that grab the reader's attention. Also, make sure your hook matches your article topic. Let your reader know exactly what you're writing about. This will create stickiness (the effect where a reader stays to read your article, rather than clicking someplace else).

  • Reserve the Resource Box - Once you've delivered on the promise of the article with quality content, you can provide information about yourself or your company in the Resource Box.

Real Trouble of Sounding Like a Salesperson

The trouble with promotional content in your articles is that it tries to convert your readers into customers before establishing any credibility.

Focus on building credibility through content that's packed with useful information and gets right to the point. If you don't, those readers may look elsewhere for that information.

Now, use these tips to help load your next set of articles with value instead of salesmanship. More value will build your credibility and ultimately increase traffic to your website or blog.

Check out this post online to watch the video, and leave a comment about how you avoid sounding too "salesy" in your articles.

[EzineArticles] Working On Your Downtime Plan

Working On Your Downtime Plan EzineArticles.com Logo

Imagine for a moment ...

You woke up early this morning, and you're motivated and ready to write and submit several new articles to take your article writing to a new level (on a Saturday, no less).

You turn on your computer, and as the machine boots up, you consult your article idea notebook and start brainstorming in your head about your first article.

With confidence high, you open up your word processing program and an Internet browser window to check emails. Suddenly, a message pops up on your screen, "Network Connection Failed. Try Again Later."

You think to yourself, "Ugh, not again," and you proceed to reboot your Internet router. As it's rebooting, you start typing the article and put checking your email on the back-burner. An hour passes. You finish the article, and, after a quick review, you're satisfied with it.

You go back to the Internet window to submit your article to EzineArticles and the Internet is still down. You try everything - rebooting the router again and then rebooting the whole computer - nothing works. You've been hit with a case of Internet downtime that'll last until you can get in contact with your ISP.

There are tons of different reasons why you might experience writing or submission downtime (e.g. your ISP connection dies, your computer crashes entirely, you've picked up a bad case of writer's block, maybe it's self-imposed, etc.).

Arm yourself with a "Downtime Plan" to prepare yourself for these situations. The plan is made of a checklist of things that you can pick up at a moment's notice. Items on the list don't need to be done to move forward, but they help your overall organization and results. Here are some places to start:

"Downtime Plan" Ideas

  • Update Your Editorial Calendar – Jot down your next month of articles. Building a schedule like this will help you accomplish what you want to accomplish and help you write on a regular basis.

  • Review Your Strategy – Sometimes we get so caught up in doing, doing, doing, that we have no time to reflect on the vast amount of progress we've made and evaluate that progress for what it's worth. Stepping back, reviewing your article writing plan and examining how it fits in with your overall goals is a valuable activity to help you polish your strategy.

  • Plan Other Distribution Channels – Always have a printed list of your published articles on-hand. Look at each article and ask yourself, "Where else could I use this?" Make note of anything you can come up with.

  • Brainstorm Article Repurposing Ideas – Take your printed list of published articles and think about ways that this material could be easily repurposed. Could you build a teleseminar or video around a group of articles? What about a podcast or webinar?

  • Simply Write - If your Internet is down but your computer works, you can still use a word processing program to outline or write out articles without submitting them. If you're left completely without a computer, you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way and pull out a pen and paper.

  • Head to the Local Library/Bookstore - Pick up books written by other experts in your niche, and do some research to give your writing new angles. When you finish reading, you'll not only have acquired the knowledge for multiple new articles, you can also write a book review article with your analysis of the content.

  • Become a Student of Article Writing - Educate yourself on the art and science of article writing. Stay at the library and use their Internet to do some research on effective article writing strategies.

Downtime, self-imposed or not, will happen, so it's a good habit to keep hard-copies and digital copies of your work available at all times. That way you always have a plan to convert downtime into productive time.

[EzineArticles] Traditions Article Template

Traditions Article Template EzineArticles.com Logo

Traditions are an essential part of any common culture.

Long-lasting traditions from some cultures span generations. Perhaps others are shorter lived, but either way there is value to staying connected with the past through rituals, traditions and events.

Whether you're celebrating a holiday with traditional activities or cooking a traditional dish from your country of origin, the traditions that exist in your niche can make a great new set of articles for your account.

First, identify a tradition that's been adopted in your article niche. Whatever tradition you choose should have some personal or cultural significance with which you can identify. That connection will ensure your familiarity with the tradition and why it's important to you and others in your niche.

Components of the Traditions Article Template

  1. Keyword-Rich Title – Choose commonly-used keywords to describe the tradition in the title. Your article will be more easily found by web surfers if you stay away from obscure references in the title. Also, consider the type of audience you hope to draw with the article. Choose keywords further down the long tail of the keyword distribution curve to appeal to an audience looking for very detailed content.

  2. Introduce the Tradition – Describe it. The structure may be in list format or just in paragraphs depending on the complexity of the topic you've chosen. Again, consider your audience as you introduce the tradition. You can choose to provide very basic information or go more in-depth.

  3. Explain the Benefits – This is your chance to share exactly why the tradition is near and dear to your heart. Share why the tradition has become a part of the culture of your niche. For example, does it honor something? What are its origins? Who else is practicing the tradition and why?

  4. Counter the Shortfalls – Weigh the validity of the traditions, and explain why the tradition should be continued.

  5. Concluding the Article – Now that you've walked through the tradition, explained its benefits and thought about any shortfalls of the tradition, you have a chance to evaluate the tradition one more time and explain why it should be continued in the future ... or discontinued altogether.

This basic process should help you lay out your own observations on the various cultural traditions in your niche. Plus, an article about traditions is one of the best ways to be sure they live on.

I've been using EzineArticles.com for years. It's given me tons of search engine exposure, with thousands of accurate results for my name, all containing an article I wrote, information about me and links back to my website. EzineArticles.com inspired me to write my first book, and now I'm working on my second and third books. Thanks, EzineArticles.com!
